1911-1990 Bert Savidge was a trained engineer who worked in the outboard motor industry for most of his working life. He was also an enthusiastic motorboat racer. After the Second World War he raced in his own boat Antelope I which you can see on display in the Museum. This small, fast boat was driven in a kneeling position that was very uncomfortable.
Bert won many trophies including the prized Daily Mirror Trophy in August 1949. During his life, Bert also collected outboard engines. Many had been written off but he took them home and lovingly restored them. This collection of vintage outboard engines is one of the finest in the world. It includes many Johnson engines as well as one of the first twenty five engines ever made by Ole Evinrude. The collection is on display at the Motorboat Museum. |
